Leading with Care: What BlueSky Taught Me About True Leadership
When someone asks, "Do you love your job?" my answer is always a big, quick "yes!" Working at BlueSky is genuinely fun and truly fulfilling. My journey with BlueSky kicked off in 2022 when I joined as an intern.
I’d just moved from the coast, to a new city with so much uncertainty. That's when Max, my current boss, and the leadership team stepped in. Our very first call was about work and my life at a personal level. Leadership to me started there. He truly focused on my well-being before anything else. This was a perfect example of servant leadership from both Max and Eric, our country director. I was just an intern, completely new to Nairobi, and they went above and beyond to look after me. It taught me so much about what true care and consideration looks like in a professional setting. It wasn't about top-down commands, but truly supporting and enabling someone. Watching them in action every day reminds me that the best leaders aren't just giving orders from the top. They're walking alongside you, hand in shoulder, guiding and collaborating. Every single day, I learn something new from the BlueSky leadership team.
My role at BlueSky is in digital marketing. My work is more than just "click-and-post." It's about strategy, creativity, and a deep understanding of different audiences. BlueSky has five very different departments. When you think about them all, you realize they each need their own unique marketing approach. You can't just use one plan for everyone because their goals and their target audiences are different. The real work comes from getting all sorts of content photos, videos, stories and then making it match for each of these different brands. Making sure each department gets equal attention every single week isn't easy. It requires a lot of planning and execution. A lot goes into editing, choosing the right words and tone, color correction, scheduling posts, creating cool merchandise and infographics, doing research, looking at data, and handling client feedback and relations. And no, I don't do all this alone; we have a whole dedicated team that works together to make it all happen!
What I love most is coming up with marketing strategies. My goal isn't just to get more people to know about BlueSky, but to spread God's glory and make sure the people we already serve are really happy with us. When I get great feedback, especially about something our client relations team did, I feel super proud. It means our marketing efforts didn't just bring someone new in, but we've also created an experience that makes them want to come back. This is what digital marketing is truly about, making a real, positive impact.
So, next time you hear someone talk about "marketing," think of it like an iceberg: what you see on the surface is just a tiny part of all the amazing, hidden work happening underneath to serve you well. And I absolutely love being a part of that!
Just like a good marketer, I can't leave you hanging without telling you what to do next! I really encourage you to scroll back up and check out our departments. Discover the world waiting for you, the exciting world of BlueSky. I promise, you're bound to find something you'll love!
